What is organic young barley?
BIO young barley is a tender green grass obtained from fresh shoots of barley (Hordeum vulgare), before the plant matures into a grain. It is harvested at the moment when it contains the greatest amount of nutrients. This makes young barley a directly charged source of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants and chlorophyll. It is the high concentration of chlorophyll – the so-called “green blood” of plants – that gives barley its typical deep green color and makes it a healthy alternative to chlorophyll supplements.
The historical significance of young barley
The history of young barley dates back to ancient times. It is one of the oldest cultivated cereals, which probably originates from the Middle East. About 7,000 years ago, its breeding began to increase yields. About 2,000 years later, barley spread to Europe, where it became a key staple food - it was used, for example, in brewing beer or making cereal porridge. In ancient Egypt and Greece, barley grass played an important role not only as a source of livelihood, but also in religious and social ceremonies. The ancient Egyptians sacrificed it to the goddess Isis, and the Greeks associated it with the goddess of fertility Demeter. These cultures were already aware of the value that young barley brings. Nowadays, ORGANIC young barley is popular mainly as a dietary supplement, in the food industry (baking, beer) and also for animal feed (winter barley).
